1,000+ Happy Customers
At Swella Braid Bar and Swella Braid Bar, we’ve completed thousands of braid installs. Over time, one thing has become clear: the quality of your braid install begins long before you sit in the chair.
Proper preparation protects your natural hair, ensures the best possible result, and helps your stylist create a beautiful, tension-free style that lasts.
Here is our expert guide to preparing for your hair braiding appointment.
One of the most common mistakes we see is clients arriving with product buildup on their scalp.
Even when hair looks clean, residue from oils, gels, leave-ins, and edge controls can remain. Once braiding hair is added and the style is installed, this buildup can create a white cast or flaky appearance that clients often mistake for dry scalp.
To avoid this:
• Cleanse your scalp 24–48 hours before your appointment
• Use a clarifying shampoo first to remove buildup
• Follow with a moisturizing shampoo to restore hydration
Some Swella locations offer an Essential Cleanse & Blow-Dry service that can be added to your appointment if you'd preferour team to handle the prep for you.
A clean scalp is the foundation for a long-lasting braid style.
Your hair should be completely detangled and stretched before your appointment.
Why? Properly prepped hair allows stylists to create neat, precise parts and install braids without unnecessary tension.
The best method for stretching natural hair is a blow dryer, which creates the most optimal foundation for braid installs.
When detangling:
• Start at the ends of your hair
• Slowly work your way up toward the root
• Use a wide-tooth comb to minimize shedding
When clients arrive detangled and stretched, braiding becomes faster, smoother, and healthier for the hair.
Another common issue we see is clients arriving with insufficient braiding hair for their desired look.
At Swella, we eliminate that stress by providing braiding hair with all services. Clients can also upgrade to:
• Human hair for boho styles
• Hypoallergenic braiding hair for sensitive scalps
This ensures the stylist always has the correct amount of hair to complete the style properly.
Too little braiding hair can lead to thinner braids, inconsistent volume, or a style that doesn’t match the inspiration photo.
Inspiration photos are helpful, but they are not guarantees.
Every client has a unique combination of:
• Hair density
• Hair texture
• Hairline shape
• Natural volume
This means the same braid style can look different depending on the individual.
At Swella, we always set expectations so clients understand how their natural hair will influence the final result. Our goal is to create a style that complements your hair, not force it to mimic someone else’s.
For the healthiest installation, we require a minimum of 4 inches of natural hair.
This allows braid stylists to grip the hair securely without applying excessive tension.
If you have:
• thinning edges
• alopecia
• sensitive hairlines
Please include that information in your appointment notes. This allows our team to assess the style beforehand and determine whether modifications are needed to protect your hair.
Healthy hair always comes before aesthetics.
Ironically, one of the biggest causes of hair breakage is not the braid install itself, but how braids are removed.
Many clients become frustrated during takedown because of the long process. When braids are rushed out or aggressively pulled apart, the hair can break or shed unnecessarily.
This is why Swella members receive access to luxury braid takedown services.
During a professional takedown:
• braids are gently unraveled
• hair is carefully detangled
• shedding is minimized
• breakage risk is reduced
Proper removal protects the health of your natural hair.
If you're planning a braid install, avoid chemical services such as:
• hair dye
• relaxers
• perms
for at least two weeks before your appointment.
Fresh chemical treatments can weaken the hair shaft and increase the risk of breakage when tension is applied during braiding.
Deep conditioning or steam treatments, however, are perfectly fine and can actually strengthen the hair before your install.
When a client arrives fully prepared, stylists notice immediately.
Hair that is ready for braiding typically:
• Comb through easily with a wide-tooth comb
• Can be quickly divided into four clean quadrants
• Feels soft, hydrated, and movable
This type of hair allows stylists to braid efficiently and comfortably without pulling, snagging, or over-manipulating the hair.
In other words, the install becomes smoother for everyone involved.
A common myth is that braids themselves cause hair thinning or breakage.
In reality, healthy braids depend on two key factors:
Each client has a different hair density. Adding too much braiding hair can weigh down the natural hair and create unnecessary tension.
At Swella, our stylists are trained to add just enough hair to create the style while protecting the scalp and natural strands.
When preparation and installation are done correctly, braids can be one of the most protective styles available.
Preparing properly for your braiding appointment isn’t just about convenience. It’s about protecting your natural hair and giving your stylist the best foundation to create a beautiful, long-lasting result.
A little preparation beforehand leads to:
• healthier installs
• cleaner parts
• less tension
• longer-lasting styles
At Swella, we believe braiding should be a luxury experience that prioritizes both beauty and hair health.
And it all starts before the first braid is installed.
